Reopening of the Saalhof on the North Bank of the Main

On 26 May, Frankfurt's oldest municipal museum reopened its doors in the freshly renovated „Saalhof”. Initially the buildings themselves will be the chief focus: the rediscovery of the Saalhof ensemble is a particularly worthwhile undertaking. Throughout the construction of the new building over the next three years, we will make our presence felt in the Saalhof by offering attractive exhibitions and events.

New permanent Exhibitions

The new construction taking place at the historisches museum involves the buildings' interiors. Five permanent exhibitions on Frankfurt's widely varied history and special exhibitions are already on view in the freshly renovated old buildings at the north bank of the Main. The construction measures will conclude with the opening of new permanent exhibitions "Frankfurt once?" and "Frankfurt now!" in the new building on the Römerberg scheduled for 2015.

Architecture

In the coming years, the historisches museum frankfurt will be undergoing thorough modernization. Following an international architectural competition in 2007/08, the concrete building of 1972 will be replaced on the Römerberg by a new high-quality structure to be completed in 2016, at which time the museum will present itself as a modern municipal museum of the twenty-first century. The restoration of the historical buildings on the bank of the River Main since 2009 has now been finished.
