Buildings in the museum area

The Historical Museum consists of several buildings around a public square:
The historic Saalhof with its five buildings dating back 800 years and the exhibition building, which opened in 2017.

The exhibition building opens up the large museum area with an inviting open staircase and a public square. It was designed by Lederer Ragnarsdóttir Oei Architekten (Stuttgart) and completed in 2017. The building thus ties in with the small-scale nature and alleyways of Frankfurt's old town. The façades of the buildings are made of Main sandstone, basalt and natural plaster. Historical stone fragments and sculptures are displayed in the niches on the façade.

The Saalhof is unique in Frankfurt. Today it comprises five buildings dating back 800 years. Originally, this was the name given to all the buildings between the old Saalgasse in the north, the Fahrtor in the west, the banks of the Main in the south and the Kleiner Saalhof in the east. The five monuments of the museum that are still standing today were thoroughly restored between 2008 and 2012. This was done according to the concept of Diezinger Architekten (Eichstätt). The concept emphasizes the historical character of the five buildings, both inside and out. In addition to the Staufer royal castle with its chapel, the Saalhof consists of the following buildings: the rent tower from the middle of the 15th century, the baroque Bernus Palace from the early 18th century, the historicist Burnitz building and the customs building from 1842.
