Library

The place for research

The library collects and catalogs literature that serves the scientific work in the museum and the exhibition activities. However, it is also available to the interested public free of charge. The collection comprises around 50,000 books and periodicals as well as around 30 current specialist journals.

The library is a member of the Frankfurt Museum Libraries Association and has been part of the SWB (Südwestdeutscher Bibliotheksverbund) since 2014.

Focal points of the library

The specialist literature on the museum's collections is supplemented by books on museum studies and restoration and conservation. The holdings on numismatics and the history of art and culture are particularly extensive. The literature on textile and costume studies is supplemented by the collection "Mode, Tracht, Kostüm" (Fashion, Costume), a donation by Eva Larraß, Darmstadt, with a focus on the history of European clothing, comprising around 4,500 volumes.

Use of the library

The library is a reference library; it is not possible to borrow books. Quiet workstations with a view of the Main and a photocopier/scanner are available. As the library is a one-person library, it cannot be staffed continuously and therefore cannot be used at all times.
We therefore ask for a short pre-registration by e-mail to:
We will be happy to place books on hold for you if you mention the library shelfmarks.

Selected exhibition catalogs and publications can also be purchased in our museum store on site.
