What makes a city? How did and do the citizens of Frankfurt live? What relationships did they maintain with neighbors and strangers? The permanent exhibition Frankfurt Einst? explores these and many other questions. On 2,000 square meters and in five galleries, the city's history is examined in terms of its own logic, changing identities and attributions. It does not follow a chronological tour through history, but is structured according to the characteristics that have shaped Frankfurt and continue to shape it today.
The exhibition can be experienced again and again: The exhibits in individual areas are changed regularly. So-called "walking maps" provide new perspectives on the city. The family trail is aimed at young visitors and their families. Interactive elements enable barrier-free access to the exhibition content.
"100 x Frankfurt" offers a concise and entertaining overview with 100 objects covering a period of over 1,000 years. The "Cityscapes" gallery helps visitors to better locate themselves in the city, past and present. The squares, streets and views of the banks of the Main presented in the "Portraits of the City" provide a wide-ranging picture of Frankfurt in the past and present.
The "Citizens' City" gallery asks who makes the city. The social commitment of individual citizens as well as associations, foundations and societies is highlighted. In the changing gallery "Blickwechsel", photographers take a look at the city of the present.
Visitors can learn about the eventful history of the "money city" Frankfurt through the city as a trade fair center of the empire and as a European financial center of the present. The "World City" gallery presents Frankfurt's role as a central location in German history and as a secret capital.
The themed tour "Frankfurt's History of Democracy - 1848 to Today" takes visitors on a thematic tour of "Frankfurt Once!" using 30 objects.
The work "Von Jedem Eins" by Frankfurt artist Karsten Bott comprises 1,507 objects and tells stories of everyday life.
With "Black and German - a contradiction?", the biographical cabinet presents the story of Theodor Wonja Michael.
"Frankfurt Einst?" was realized by the museum team with the museographers arge Gillmann + Schnegg.
