CityLab Gardening Now!

CityLab Exhibition
28 April - 10 October 2021
Community gardens, hanging gardens, small gardens, allotment gardens, urban gardening ... the possibilities for gardening in the city are countless!

Apart from self-supply and free time, planting greenery seems to be a suitable measure to cope with the climate change and the city' s heat waves. What is the motivation behind gardening? What can we learn from gardeners if we want to make the city more sustainable? Where does gardening stand in the tensions between wage labor, activism, and leisure, individualism and community, property and collectivization, idealism and pragmatism?

The exhibition was created in collaboration with over 50 gardeners. In four thematic areas (Nourishing, Experiencing, Caring, and Engaging), they provided insights into their gardening practice and information about what the care and maintenance of urban green spaces means to them.

In 2021, the Historisches Museum Frankfurt presented three special exhibitions under the title "Urban Green": "Frankfurt Gardenlust" on level 0 in the new exhibition house, "Gardening Now!" in the exhibition area of Frankfurt Now! and "Environment, climate and YOU" at the Young Museum Frankfurt.
