The making of HMF – a new museum for Frankfurt

How is a museum actually created? What makes a museum a city museum? The opening of the new exhibition house completes the redesigning of the Museum Quarter. ‘The making of HMF’ illustrates the long journey from the demolition of the concrete building in 1972 to completion of the final construction phase. With the help of spectacular photographs and an extensive video installation, visitors can experience the development of the new Historisches Museum Frankfurt in a time lapse – from the removal of the statue of Charlemagne and the demolition of the concrete building to the opening of the exhibition house with its striking double-gable roof. However, the focus is not on the architecture alone. The restoration of the exhibits and the development of the unusual concept for a city museum in terms of content are also thematised by interviews and glimpses behind the scenes of the museum.
